Curious about destination trailers? These RVs are great as vacation homes and as full-time RVing options. Read on to learn more!
Budgeting for a Destination Trailer
One of the bigger differences between destination trailers and other RV options is the price. They’re going to be a little more expensive because they’re bigger and more durable, and often more luxurious. The perks of ownership will more than make up for any extra cost, but you’ll still need to budget properly. Make sure you’re getting something that won’t place an undue financial burden on you while you’re trying to relax, while also balancing that concern with realistic market prices.
Keep in mind, for all the money you spend, you’ll also be saving quite a bit. You’ll spend less money on maintenance and upkeep, and it’ll certainly be cheaper than buying a house. You might also save on property taxes, and general ownership costs will be much lower than if you purchased a stationary home.
Towing a Destination Trailer
Towing one of these rigs is going to be challenging, but not impossible. Firstly, check to make sure you’re the one who should be towing it. There are certain trailers that are big enough (especially if they start to get into park model territory) that you’ll need to hire a special service to transport it.
When you’re sure it’s okay to haul your destination trailer, make sure you’re using the right tow vehicle. Check your gross combined weight rating (GCWR) to see if you can use what you have or if you’ll need to upgrade (if you have a one-ton truck, you should be good). Then spend plenty of time practicing so you won’t be learning as you go. This should include figuring out how to turn, park, reverse, and brake with the trailer. You can also hit the highway for some merging and high-speed driving practice.
